Since long I had been thinking of writing a text book on Modern Europe from the French Revolution to the end of he Second World War. After a prolonged and persistent effort the dream has finally come true. By no means this is an original work and I lack that competence. I have been teaching Modern Europe for a considerable length of time and I have tried to capitalize my experience in the class rooms. I have consulted the works of eminent historians on European history and tried to present the events chronologically in a simplified manner. During my post graduate days in the Calcutta University, I had the privilege of studying Modern Europe as my special paper. I take this opportunity to remember my two outstanding teachers late Dr. Chinmay Chaudhuri and Prof. Hari Shankar Vasudevan, who taught us Modern Europe. I also consider myself to be privileged as I was benefited from the teaching of the eminent historian Prof. Benoy Bhusan Chaudhuri, who taught us the paper on Industrial Revolution. Shri Gopal Mukherjee, my teacher in the under graduate college, also played a very positive role in instilling my interest into European history. Discussions with my friends Dr. Suranjan Chatterjee, Dr. Ruma Chatterjee, Shri Pulakesh Roy, Dr. Kanta Chatterjee, Dr. Ratan Das Gupta and Prof. Amit Bhattacharya were quite encouraging. I was also strongly encouraged by my younger friends like Dr. Sabyasachi Chatterjee, Dr. Pampa Sengupta, Shrimati Aparajita Bhattacharya and Shrimati Shyamali Sarkar to write a book on Modern Europe. Shrimati Sukanya Sanyal took all the pains to go through some parts of the draft and enriched me by her useful comments. My mother, my wife Mandira and daughter Rashmi had always been a source of inspiration. Rashmi, herself, a post graduate student of History in Jadavpur University made some valuable suggestions from students' point of view. Finally, I thank all the members of the Pragatishil Prokashak including Shri Kamal Mitra for their enthusiasm and persistence in seeing this volume through the publication process. But I must admit that this book owes a great deal to my students, whose enquiries on the subject helped me to develop a comprehensive view. I, however, alone stand responsible for any errors of fact or judgment.
