In post-independence India, the modern art movement that started getting propagated with the idea of opposing indigenous existence and feelings. there the protagonist was the common man and the villain turned out to be those who wanted to keep the indigenous existence intact. So painting did not remain confined within pictures and calendar-centric art. Local environment entered paintings and created an imagery that came up with a well-structured manifestation and was not an imitatioin of symbolistic sensitivities. This art scenario crossed national boundaries and entered international domains. Among those who took leading part in this work, Prokash Karmakar was one of the foremost poineering art personalities.
