In the Indian subcontinent, caste is like a multiple-edged sword. Asymmetrical distribution of resources, ritualistic sense of purity-pollution and an ingrained graded inequality have continued for centuries, placing the caste communities in precarious marginality. The obscenity of casteism has pushed the communities to such a morally degraded realm where identity equals shame, a burden impossible to remove. Affirmative actions have brought the caste individuals on public platforms with the promises of justice and equality. Still, caste is far from being annihilated from the Indian secular public sphere. We waited for Yashica Dutt to articulate in her Coming Out as a Dalit: A Memoir how an ingrained, inherited sense of shame compelled her to hide her caste when she was enrolled in an elite school. And how she finally gathered the courage to shake off the sense of shame and come out confidently as a Dalit. But we know that caste is something to be hidden in public if the Dalit wants to stand face to face with the Savarnas, if they want to get honour and equality, caste prejudice has been so naturalised.
